Dr. Katie Haukos, DVM, MS (pronounced “Hocus,” like hocus pocus), has been surrounded by animals her entire life, fostering a deep compassion and dedication to their care. Originally from Lubbock, Texas, she grew up competing in hunter/jumper events and later continued her equestrian career as a member of the Kansas State University Equestrian Team.
Acquiring her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2017, she owned and operated her own clinic in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, where she built lasting relationships with clients and provided individualized care for a wide range of equine patients.
She is now excited to expand her work in equine sports medicine through her involvement with Epona, where she collaborates with cutting-edge stem cell research and regenerative therapies. This opportunity allows her to further emphasize performance horse longevity, soundness, and long-term athletic success.
Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Haukos enjoys life with her husband, Matt, and their son, Griffin, who was welcomed in the summer of 2024. In addition to balancing family and practice life, she plans to actively compete in ranch horse events, keeping her directly connected to the real-world performance expectations of today’s working horses and their riders.
Lauren McCain serves as the Practice Manager and Veterinary Assistant, bringing a strong foundation in performance horse management, breeding programs, and hands-on client support. She works closely alongside Dr. Katie Haukos as a full-time road assistant, providing skilled support during appointments, managing equipment and records, and ensuring both horses and clients feel confident and well cared for throughout each visit.
With a background in showing, training, and marketing both horses and mules, Lauren brings valuable real-world experience to every case. She also manages an active breeding program focused on mules, draft crosses, and ranch horses, giving her a well-rounded perspective on performance demands, reproductive management, and long-term equine soundness.
Having worked closely with Dr. Haukos over the past year, Lauren has become an integral part of the veterinary team, helping create a seamless and supportive experience for both clients and their horses. She has a special interest in equine sports medicine, rehabilitation, and reproduction, and is excited to be part of a program that emphasizes advanced regenerative therapies and performance horse longevity.
Outside of the clinic, Lauren remains deeply involved in the ranch horse and mule industry, continuing to show, develop, and promote versatile performance horses while supporting clients and breeding programs across the region.
